At about 5 am on January 17 1995, the Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred and among its victims was XEBEC, one of the most important presenters of music and sound art in Japan. Although the building itself was not severely damaged, the ground in the area sank more than 40 centimeters due to liquefaction, and the pipes supplying gas and water were cut off, making it impossible to use the heating or water and sewage systems. All transportation links to XEBEC were severed and the end result was obviously an abrupt interruption in programming.

Ever resourceful, the staff has turned to the Internet to continue its activities, which are gradually returning to normal. We are happy to lend our support by publishing the electronic versions of the Xebec newsletter, Sound Arts.
